Do You Call It a Fingerboard or a Fretboard?
by by
When it comes to guitar terminology—whether for bass guitars or otherwise—there's quite a lexicon of terms that can leave even seasoned players scratching their heads.
For instance, Fender refers to the part of the guitar after the nut as the pegboard, while Gibson enthusiasts will call it the headstock. Personally, I prefer the straightforward term headstock.
However, the distinction between a fingerboard and a fretboard is straightforward and clear.

Fretboard: This refers to a bass guitar that has frets.
Fingerboard: This indicates a bass guitar that lacks frets.
(Note: The image above has fretlines but no frets, making it a fretless instrument.)
So, there you have it! If your instrument has frets, you're dealing with a fretboard. If it doesn't, it's a fingerboard. 🙂
