Buying Guide: Guitar Recommendations for Different Price Ranges
In the guitar community, there are many "no-name" guitars, often referred to as "firewood" due to their low quality. While these guitars might be tempting due to their low prices, I strongly advise against purchasing them if you're serious about learning guitar.
These guitars often come with various issues, such as poor intonation, high string action, warped necks, and subpar pickups. These seemingly small problems can significantly hinder a beginner’s progress. For instance, high string action can make it incredibly difficult to form chords, especially for beginners who haven’t yet developed finger strength or calluses. This can be discouraging and may cause you to abandon the guitar altogether.
Below, I've categorized guitar recommendations based on different price ranges to help you make informed decisions.
1. Under 1,000 RMB
For acoustic guitars, I recommend laminate guitars from brands like Kama. Despite being laminate, Kama guitars offer excellent quality and playability at this price point, making them suitable for beginners. However, I don't have any recommendations for electric guitars in this price range, as the quality is usually too compromised.
2. 1,000 - 3,000 RMB
For electric guitars, it's best to opt for models from well-known sub-brands such as Squier by Fender, Epiphone by Gibson, or reputable domestic brands with quality guarantees.
For acoustic guitars, I suggest purchasing branded solid tops. Some good options include Kama’s FS36, F1, or Yamaha’s FS/FG830, FS/FG800. Although some lesser-known brands also offer solid tops within this range, their quality and craftsmanship might be unreliable.
These recommended guitars offer a basic quality assurance that will support your learning journey. They won’t cause you to prematurely give up due to hardware issues. Additionally, these guitars allow you to resell or upgrade easily without significant financial loss once you’ve developed a better understanding of your tonal and playability preferences.
3. 3,000 - 5,000 RMB
This price range offers a wide variety of guitars, both acoustic and electric, that provide excellent value for money. You can find brands and models that balance quality, appearance, and tone.
For electric guitars, models from PRS SE, Gibson LPJ, Epiphone signature and higher series, Ibanez, Mexican Fender, Japanese Fender, LTD, Edwards, Jackson, Schecter, and Sterling are all solid choices. In this range, electric guitars often feature better hardware and pickups, sometimes even from renowned manufacturers.
For acoustic guitars, you can get top-tier solid tops. Choose a brand and model that appeals to you, as the quality is generally reliable at this price point.
4. 5,000 - 10,000 RMB
In this range, you’ll find entry-level models from major brands or high-end models from their sub-brands. Be cautious, as brand premiums can inflate prices, making it harder for beginners to discern value.
For electric guitars, consider models from E-II, Gibson Traditional, or higher-end Fender models. These guitars often come with better components and construction quality, offering superior playability and tone.
For acoustic guitars, you can afford premium all-solid models from brands like Kama’s A1 and B1, Yamaha’s FS3, LL16, and even Martin 00015M Streetmaster or Gibson G45 at the higher end.
5. Over 10,000 RMB
Guitars in this price range offer distinct tonal qualities and are often tailored to specific styles. They feature premium materials and craftsmanship, making them suitable for discerning musicians.
For electric guitars, you'll find high-end models with top-notch hardware, such as German-made Floyd Rose bridges and industry-leading pickups. These guitars integrate a mix of classic and modern features to suit various playing styles.

For acoustic guitars, choose a brand and design that resonates with you. At this level, you’re investing in both an instrument and a piece of art.
Final Thoughts
As a beginner, don’t be overly concerned with owning a top-tier guitar or what others think of your instrument. Focus on practicing and improving your skills. Whether you have a 1,000 RMB guitar or a 10,000 RMB guitar, meaningful discussions about guitar knowledge and dedicated practice are what truly matter. Remember, you’re learning music, and the guitar is your tool—not a status symbol. Good tone enhances your music, but the essence of a piece lies in your creativity and execution.
